Himachal Pradesh set to develop new tourist spots with the theme of hill village culture

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Himachal Pradesh tourism is promoting traditional cultures of hill villages in a bid to revive them as major tourist spots. This is being done under the Central Government’s National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) scheme.

According to the Himachal Pradesh tourism department, the government has come up with a groundbreaking scheme called ‘Har Gaon Ki Kahani’ (the story of every village) to encourage tourists to tour Himachal Pradesh’s villages.  This, they say will increase tourism in the state the same way the ‘Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai’ (every house speaks something) scheme did.

Under the ‘Har Gaon Ki Kahani’ scheme the government of Himachal Pradesh had compiled a list of historical buildings present in the state. It then asked villagers to come up with popular stories related to their villages which would help in attracting tourists to their villages.

“The scheme is expected to generate plenty of employment opportunities for the local youth, as Shimla and other towns of Himachal Pradesh are popular for their folktales and local legends”, said a government official.

“With the passage of time, the public have started forgetting what kind of Shimla it once used to be. It had been a royal destination, courtesy the Britishers; had several legends & folklores and has one of the oldest cultures of India. All of this forms a part of rich history that needs to be passed on from one generation to another. Through this, not only will our own people know about our traditions and cultures, but there would be greater inflow of tourists in Himachal Pradesh”, said Mr. Arun Sharma, Director of Tourism Department of Himachal Pradesh.

Meanwhile, 10-day training is being given to the local youth of Himachal so that they can work as tourist guides. “It will be a good opportunity for us in terms of employment. The state tourism department is expected to come up with attractive tour packages for Himachal Pradesh to attract even more tourists. Secondly, if we look from the knowledge point of view, we would be lucky enough to know about the hidden cultures of some of our ancestor’s villages”, said Punit, a tourist guide.
